World Brain Tumour Day

World Brain Tumour Day is a day dedicated to creating awareness about brain tumours. It is observed annually on June 8. A brain tumour is an unnecessary or abnormal growth of cells in the brain. Depending on their location and intensity of growth, tumour are classified as benign (noncancerous, curable, slow growth rate) or malignant (cancerous, further classified depending upon their potential to multiply).

When the tumour grows inside the human brain, it puts pressure on that part and affects the body functions that particular area is responsible for. Researchers have identified over 120 types of brain tumours on the basis of the brain tissue that they impact.

History

Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe declared World Brain Tumour Day in 2000 as an international commemoration day. World Brain Tumour Day is now celebrated annually on June 8 as a tribute to all brain tumour patients and their families.

Significance

The significance of World Brain Tumour Day is to shed light on the impact of brain tumours on individuals and society as a whole.

Brain tumours can affect people of all ages, and they can have serious consequences on cognitive and physical functions, as well as emotional well-being.

Through World Brain Tumour Day, individuals and organisations can unite and spread awareness and educate everyone about the life-taking disease. Further, this day provides the opportunity to offer support to those affected.

On World Brain Tumour Day, various activities are organized to spread awareness, such as public lectures, seminars, fundraising events, and social media campaigns.

These initiatives aim to improve understanding of brain tumours, highlight the challenges faced by patients and their families, and emphasize the importance of early detection, proper diagnosis, and effective treatment options.
