All India Handicrafts Week


All India Handicrafts Week is celebrated from 8th to 14th December every year throughout India. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm to increase the awareness, cooperation and its importance in the society about handicrafts among the people of all the states of our country. This whole week’s ceremony is a special time for all the craftsmen as they get a wonderful opportunity to highlight their great works, all over the world and helps in keeping the tradition and culture of years of handicrafts alive.

Indian Navy Submarine Day


 

Indian Navy celebrates Submarine Day on December 8, highlighting INS Kalvari’s legacy and the diverse fleet, showcasing India’s commitment to maritime security.


It was on December 8 that the Indian Naval Ensign was unfurled on INS Kalvari, the first submarine to be inducted in the Indian Navy, at Riga in Latvia, the erstwhile USSR, in 1967. Kalvari is the Malayalam name for Tiger Shark, a predator in the Indian Ocean. The Kalvari was decommissioned in 1996 after 29 years of service.

Bodhi Day


Bodhi Day is the Buddhist holiday on December 8 that commemorates the day that Gautama Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment, also known as bodhi in Sanskrit and Pali. According to tradition, Siddhartha had recently forsaken years of extreme ascetic practices and resolved to sit under a peepal tree, also known as a Bodhi tree and simply meditate until he found the root of suffering, and how to liberate oneself from it.

Uday Shankar's Birth Anniversary


Uday Shankar, born on 8 December 1900, was an Indian dancer and choreographer, best known for creating a fusion style of dance, adapting European theatrical techniques to Indian classical dance, imbued with elements of Indian classical, folk and tribal dance, which he later popularised in India, Europe and the United States in 1920s and 1930s.  He was a pioneer of modern dance in India.

John Lennon, who passed away on 8 December 1980, was an English singer, songwriter and musician who gained worldwide fame as the founder, co-songwriter, co-lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the Beatles.
