August 4th is International
Owl Awareness Day to draw attention to this fascinating group of nocturnal
birds of prey. Yet, we often unintentionally harm them. American Bird
Conservancy and Partners in Flight estimates that a third or more of native owl
species are in decline. The observance educates communities on how to join in
conserving and protecting these majestic birds. For instance: use natural
deterrents instead of poison to control rodents, mow less to provide owls with
hunting territories, build nest boxes in areas where dead trees are scarce, and
keep your cats indoors.
