Puneeth Rajkumar's Birth Anniversary

 

Puneeth Rajkumar, born on 17 March 1975, affectionately known as Appu (by his fans, after his first lead role in the movie Appu), was an Indian actor, playback singer, film producer, television presenter and philanthropist who worked in Kannada cinema.  He was the youngest son of legendary actor and matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar. He was one of the most popular actors in Kannada cinema. He appeared as a lead in 32 films. As a child, he appeared in many films. His performances as a child actor in Vasantha Geetha (1980), Bhagyavantha (1981), Chalisuva Modagalu (1982), Eradu Nakshatragalu (1983), Bhakta Prahaladha (1983), Yarivanu (1984) and Bettada Hoovu (1985) were praised. He won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist for his role of Ramu in Bettada Hoovu. He also won Karnataka State Award Best Child artist for Chalisuva Modagalu and Eradu Nakshatragalu. Puneeth's first lead role was in 2002's Appu. In a career spanning three decades, he has won one National Film Award, four Karnataka State Film Awards, six Filmfare Awards South and five SIIMA awards. He was conferred with the Doctorate by Mysuru University. The Karnataka Government conferred the state's highest civilian award, Karnataka Ratna, to Puneeth Rajkumar on 1 November 2022, posthumously.

Sachin Tendulkar Creates History With 100th International Century (2012)

On 16 March 2012, Sachin Tendulkar cemented his legacy as one of cricket’s most complete batters by reaching an exclusive landmark. Widely regarded as the sport’s greatest-ever batter, the Master Blaster is also cricket’s all-time leading scorer.

In the twilight phase of his career, Tendulkar registered a jaw-dropping feat previously deemed near-impossible. He scored his 100th international century while competing in the 2012 Asia Cup.

A 38-year-old Tendukar smashed 114 runs when India faced Bangladesh in the tournament’s group stage on this day in 2012. It was his 49th ODI century and, interestingly, only his first against Bangladesh in the 50-over format. Despite his 114 runs, India lost as Bangladesh chased the target.

The History of Lips Appreciation Day

Thomas and Ruth Roy of Wellcat Holiday established Lips Appreciation Day. Although the intention behind the establishment of this day is self-evident—to acknowledge the beauty of the lips as a facial feature—the exact year in which this appreciation day was initially observed is unknown.

The lips, which are evident on the faces of many mammals, including humans, are an essential component of the visage. The human lips are the two delicate, fleshy pleats that encircle the mouth and provide coverage for the teeth. They can be thin, thick, pouty, or plump. In addition to functioning for feeding, sucking, whistling, and the articulation of speech and sound, the lips are inherently mobile. The lips, being an especially sensitive and pinkish sensory organ in humans, are fundamental components of facial expressions such as pouting, grimacing, beaming, and grunting. The lips, by their flexibility, are also employed for intimate and erogenous activities such as kissing.

The cellular structure of the skin on the lips consists of three to five layers and is notably more delicate than the skin of the rest of the face. Due to the absence of a protective barrier present on the face as a whole, the lips become more susceptible to chapping and dryness, particularly in extremely hot temperatures. Due to their greater susceptibility, the lips may experience a tenfold reduction in hydration loss compared to all other facial areas. Maintaining the lips hydrated and alluring necessitates the application of extraordinary, meticulous attention to detail. There are currently a plethora of aesthetic products available for lip care and balm protection. Lipsticks, lip balms, and moisturizing lotions are a few examples.

Columbus returns to Spain after his first voyage to the New World (1493)

 

On March 15, 1493, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus arrived back in the Spanish harbour of Palos de la Frontera, two months after concluding his first voyage to the Western Hemisphere.

On his arrival back in Spain, Christopher Columbus immediately wrote a letter announcing his discoveries to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, who had helped finance his trip. The letter was written in Spanish and sent to Rome, where it was printed in Latin by Stephan Plannck. Plannck mistakenly left Queen Isabella’s name out of the pamphlet’s introduction but quickly realized his error and reprinted the pamphlet a few days later.

Pi Day

 

Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (the 3rd month) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant figures of π, and was first celebrated in the United States. It was founded in 1988 by Larry Shaw, an employee of a science museum in San Francisco, the Exploratorium. Celebrations often involve eating pie or holding pi recitation competitions. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day. UNESCO’s 40th General Conference designated Pi Day as the International Day of Mathematics in November 2019.

Other dates when people celebrate pi include Pi Approximation Day on July 22 (22/7 in the day/month format, an approximation of π) and June 28 (6.28, an approximation of 2π or tau).

 

 

Ustad Vilayat Khan's Death Anniversary

 

Ustad Vilayat Khan, who passed away on 13 March 2004, in Mumbai, aged 75, was an Indian classical sitar player, considered by many to be the greatest sitarist of his age. Along with Imdad Khan, Enayat Khan, and Imrat Khan, he is credited with the creation and development of gayaki ang (a technique that emulates the vocal melisma of Hindustani classical music) on the sitar.

He recorded his first 78-RPM disc at the age of and gave his last concert in 2004 at the age of 75. He has composed the music for several films, including Jalsaghar (1958), The Guru (1969), and Kadambari (1976). He had given a chance to newcomer Kavita Krishnamurthy in Kadambari which was the first song in her career.

World Kidney Day 2025

World Kidney Day (WKD) is a global health awareness campaign focusing on the importance of the kidneys and reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.

World Kidney Day is observed annually on the 2nd Thursday in March. In 2025, World Kidney Day is being observed on March 13.

At the start of this holiday, 66 countries observed this day in 2006. Within two years, this number rose to 88. WKD is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF). This holiday was intended to raise awareness about conditions of the kidney; although many are treatable, they are a secondary medical concern of the greater population.
