National Sardines Day (USA)
Purpose and Significance
The day aims to encourage people to appreciate this small, oily fish, which is a powerhouse of nutrients despite its humble size.
- Nutritional Benefits: Sardines are an excellent source of
omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart and brain health, and are also
rich in vitamins D and B12, calcium, and protein.
- Sustainability: They are considered one of the most
sustainable seafood choices because they reproduce quickly and their
fishing has minimal environmental impact.
- Cultural Importance: The term "sardine" originated
from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. The fish holds significant
cultural importance in many countries, particularly in Portugal, where
they are a central feature of the Festas de Santo António in Lisbon every

Fibonacci Day
November 23 is celebrated as Fibonacci Day
because when the date is written in the mm/dd format (11/23), the digits in the
date form a Fibonacci sequence: 1,1,2,3. A Fibonacci sequence is a series of
numbers where a number is the sum of the two numbers before it. For example: 1,
1, 2, 3...is a Fibonacci sequence. Here, 2 is the sum of the two numbers before
it (1+1). Similarly, 3 is the sum of the two numbers before it (1+2).
It is an annual holiday that honours one
of the most influential mathematicians of the Middle Ages - Leonardo Bonacci.
