Every year on May 4th, communities around the globe come together to observe International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD). This day is dedicated to honouring the bravery, commitment, and sacrifices of firefighters who risk their lives to protect others. It’s a time to express gratitude for their unwavering service and to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
International Firefighters’ Day History and Significance
International Firefighters’ Day was established after the tragic deaths of five firefighters in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia, in 1998. The day was proposed by JJ Edmondson, a volunteer firefighter, to honour their memory and recognize the sacrifices made by firefighters globally.
May 4th was chosen as it is the feast day of St. Florian, the patron
saint of firefighters. St. Florian was a Roman officer who organized
firefighting brigades and is remembered for his courage and dedication to
protecting lives.
