Audrey Hepburn's Birth Anniversary

Audrey Hepburn, born on 4 May 1929, in Ixelles, Belgium, was a film and fashion icon during Hollywood's Golden Age. Hepburn is one of the few people to have won an Academy Award, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award.

In her first major role Hepburn became the first actress to win an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for "Roman Holiday" (1953). Hepburn's other major film roles included "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961), My Fair Lady (1964) and the thriller "Wait Until Dark" (1967)

Hepburn formed an influential professional relationship and friendship with the Parisian courtier, Hubert de Givenchy  who created her famous gamine on screen look, including the iconic "little black dress" from the 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's".

In later life Hepburn was a UNICEF Ambassador, making many field trips and testifying before US Congress. She is the recipient of a number of humanitarian awards, including the US Presidential Medal of Freedom.

International Firefighters’ Day was established after the tragic deaths of five firefighters in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia, in 1998. The day was proposed by JJ Edmondson, a volunteer firefighter, to honour their memory and recognize the sacrifices made by firefighters globally.​

May 4th was chosen as it is the feast day of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. St. Florian was a Roman officer who organized firefighting brigades and is remembered for his courage and dedication to protecting lives.

World Press Freedom Day

Every year on May 3, World Press Freedom Day is celebrated to spotlight the important role the fourth pillar of democracy, media plays by bringing truth to the public. The day raises awareness about the challenges faced by journalists and ensures that the information flows freely. It also honours those media professionals who have lost their lives or risked everything to find the truth.

World Press Freedom Day: History

Following UNESCO’s recommendation in 1991, the United Nations General Assembly officially established World Press Freedom Day in 1993 and it was first observed in 1994. Since then, May 3 has been celebrated as World Press Freedom Day to remember the Declaration of Windhoek, which was adopted in 1991. The declaration highlighted that having a free and independent press is very important for democracy.

Darjeeling HPO inaugurated in 1921

 

Darjeeling is a small town and a famous hill station in the Indian state of West Bengal. The UNESCO heritage site Darjeeling Head Post Office heritage building is recorded as one of the oldest post office buildings in the region. This post office building was inaugurated on the 2nd of May, 1921.

The post office is located in the Municipal building on the Laden La Road, Darjeeling. The Municipality was established in 1850. This municipal building is also a heritage structure and yet another heritage building - HPO is nearby on the same road.

 

Satyajit Ray's Birth Anniversary

 

Satyajit Ray, born on 2 May 1921, in Calcutta [now Kolkata], was a Bengali motion-picture director, writer, and illustrator who brought the Indian cinema to world recognition with Pather Panchali (1955; The Song of the Road) and its two sequels, known as the Apu Trilogy. As a director, Ray was noted for his humanism, his versatility, and his detailed control over his films and their music. He was one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century.

Leonardo da Vinci's Death Anniversary

 

Leonardo da Vinci, who passed away on 2 May 1519, aged 67, in Château du Clos Lucé, Amboise, France, was an Italian painter, draftsman, sculptor, architect, and engineer whose skill and intelligence, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. His Last Supper (1495-98) and Mona Lisa (c. 1503-19) are among the most widely popular and influential paintings of the Renaissance His notebooks reveal a spirit of scientific inquiry and a mechanical inventiveness that were centuries ahead of their time.

The unique fame that Leonardo enjoyed in his lifetime and that, filtered by historical criticism, has remained undimmed to the present day rests largely on his unlimited desire for knowledge, which guided all his thinking and behaviour. An artist by disposition and endowment, he considered his eyes to be his main avenue to knowledge; to Leonardo, sight was man’s highest sense because it alone conveyed the facts of experience immediately, correctly, and with certainty. Hence, every phenomenon perceived became an object of knowledge, and saper vedere (“knowing how to see”) became the great theme of his studies. He applied his creativity to every realm in which graphic representation is used: he was a painter, sculptor, architect, and engineer. But he went even beyond that. He used his superb intellect, unusual powers of observation, and mastery of the art of drawing to study nature itself, a line of inquiry that allowed his dual pursuits of art and science to flourish.
